Shades of Grey by Michael Cargill

Three stories. Three very different people. All of them battling to survive.

Fun Facts
DDS: Who is your favourite Character and why? (one of your own creation – published/unpublished)
Probably John the Baptist from the first story in Shades of Grey.  Despite the nickname he is neither an angel nor a holy man – quite the opposite in fact.  Although he is a violent person, he has his own moral code that prevents him from being a complete psychopath.
He also has an immense amount of fun doing the things that he does.

DDS: On a deserted island – you would take which 3 things?
Pants, socks, umbrella.  There is a saying that goes “wear clean underwear in case you have an accident,” and there is no escaping it’s wisdom just because you are stranded on a desert island.  If you had an accident, like falling down a deep hole, and some cannibals found you, if they saw that your underwear was dirty how would you ever get over it?
The umbrella is mainly because cocktails never look right without one.

DDS: One thing readers would be surprised to know about you…
I have a tattoo of a question mark on my upper left arm.

DDS: Your favourite food / drink and a funny incident tied to it.
I love curry and have had several embarrassing episodes whilst drunk in an Indian restaurant.  I had a night out with work and people were filming me making stupid faces and noises.  I probably annoyed most of the other diners.
Another time there was some drunk, homeless man ambling around outside the restaurant.  I went out to talk to him and try to bring him inside.  I couldn’t understand a word he was saying and I don’t think he could understand me either.  It was beautiful.

DDS: If you were a part of a horror movie – which character would you be?
The director.  I would shout at everyone, ask for lots of tea, coffee and bacon sandwiches and just be a complete pain.  If the film flopped I would just blame it on the rubbish actors.

DDS: Is it true that you were microwaving some eggs and one of them exploded in your face when you took them out?
It is true, yes.  How the hell did you know?  I love eggs and so was looking forward to them.  I opened the lid, got ready to tuck in when POW! Right in the face.

When I asked him about the USP of his book...
It’s well good, like.
It is a collection of three different stories and all three are very different from each other.  Some bits will make you laugh, some bits might make you think and others… well, you will just have to find that out for yourself!
In each story the main character is thrown into a situation that they have no control over, with each of them handling it in different ways.  In the first story you have John the Baptist (my hero *swoon*) being naughty and trying to counter other people’s naughtiness.
In the second story you have a rookie WWII soldier who comes of age when he realizes that war isn’t as black and white as he first thought.
Lastly, the third story has a young boy realize that his most prized possession isn’t all that it seems…
Hmmm, reading all that back I sound like a salesman.  Does it count as a USP?  I am starting to feel like an estate agent, can someone put me out of my misery please?

  1. I must admit, that title had me thinking you were reviewing the controversial erotica novel. The incredibly close title may work for or against Michael. My fingers are crossed that it works for him!
